I mentioned in another post that I've been trying to improve my mixing skills. I've spent a lot of time looking for some techniques that I could learn to use. Multi-band compression is my latest discovery, and I think I've turned a corner in being able to get closer to reference mixes, but only the listener knows:)

I've recorded and uploaded a handful of songs and I'm going back to each of them to make improvements. Here's one I don't think I ever posted here, but it is the latest version. Critiques are appreciated.

THE WAY IT SOMETIMES GOES

Copyright © 2012 by Scott H Olson

Bills on the table
Money spent
Stack of bills on the table
Money's already spent
Landlord knockin', lookin' for the rent

Icebox empty
Cupboard's bare
Icebox empty
And the cupboard's bare
Reach in the cookie jar, nothin' there

Chorus

That's the way, it sometimes goes
That's the way, everybody knows
C'mon baby don't you be so blue
You still got me and I still got you, but
That's the way, it sometimes goes

Clothes in the basket
Dishes in the sink
Dirty clothes in the basket
Dirty dishes in the sink
No rest for the weary, no time to think

Repeat Chorus

Well written and well sung song. I like the photo of holding hands on the table as it adds value to the song. You picked a good subject since almost everyone has had trouble getting by. I did not hear the original mix but I found the current mix eell balanced and easy to listen to.

Another good one, Scott.

Good vocal. Excellent drum sound...and organ. All the instruments are crisp and clear. I thought the bass needed to be a bit "beefier".

Enjoyed this one, too..

Good tune! I agree there's some bass (and maybe mid too) deficiency--sounds kind of hollow. I think the organ and the vocal work very well. Should be an easy fix. Enjoyed it! Take care. Greg

liked this organ blues a lot – great vocals and choice of instruments!

a little more bass as mentioned and i also would turn down the drums just a little

whats the signal path of the drums in the mix?
