Coming To An End
© 2015 K Leverett 09/13/15

The early morning chill
Sends shivers down my spine
I’m fueling up the truck
Making up for lost time
And I haven’t made a call
Even tho you’re on my mind
And this distance between us
Is killing me

We’re coming to an end
As any fool could see
We’re holding onto shreds
Of what we used to be

If we could turn back time
And maybe start again
But the ice is pretty thin
We’re coming to an end

If the weather just stays clear
I’ll make Baltimore on time
Cause I’m pulling forty tons
Across the Mason Dixon line
But I haven’t made a call
Tho you’re always on my mind
And this distance between us
Is killing me

We’re coming to an end
As any fool could see
We’re holding onto shreds
Of what we used to be

If we could turn back time
And maybe start again
But the ice is pretty thin
We’re coming to an end

Kenny,

I really like what you are doing...

"We’re coming to an end
As any fool could see
We’re holding onto shreds
Of what we used to be"

Nice.

The whole thing had a bit of a Jason Isbell sound/feel - that's a good thing in my book! (Been binging on him lately). The small band production is very nicely done. Good mix. And the vocals sound good!

I like it!

I had copied this before I saw Floyd' comments, so I included it anyway. Great emotional impact in a handful of words-that's the way to do it Kenny!! This is a great write. I love the way their physical separation is a metaphor for their emotional distance. The "story" aspect is brief but it is all the listener needs to grab on to the emotion. Paul Simon did a wonderful thing with physical versus emotional distance with "Slip-sliding Away". I imagine you know the tune but if you don't you should check it out. This is another excellent write! Take care. Greg

Yes. Excellent across the board. You are turning out some really nice songs. Good lyrics and doing a very good job on matching the right instruments with the song.

Enjoyed this from start to finish. I see you are also using one of my favorite bass RT's with 366. Can't lose with using it - It's very versatile.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Thanks, means a lot coming from you. You write some fine lines and we both dig Jason Isbell, he's been my favorite for awhile, of course I still listen to Ryan Adams, John Hiatt, Steve Earle, and many more for inspiration. I'm going small band, makes those soft vocals cut thru better. Thanks for the very kind words.

Greg, you're a gentleman and a scholar (you are a scholar right?)
You got the soul of this right away, I never understood when I would read about famous song writers talking about throwing out words and lines until you have the only the words that effectively tell the story and is only what you mean to say. (It was something like that.) I had many more lines and phrases in this that weren't necessary to tell this simple story, maybe I'll use them for another song. I don't know why I'm giving an amateur's advice on writing but there you go. I love me some Paul Simon, I don't know why but that is one of my least favorite songs of his, maybe it was played too many times on radio. Thank you for your kind words
sir, I look forward to your next song.

Kenny

Charlie, thank you so much. 366 does a good job, I sometimes wish they could add a more melodic bass player (think McCartney with that stop and go style, a walk for one chord into ascending note stops, then the root notes, etc.) I will record my own Bass lines a lot on more pop, rock type songs, midi keyboard into Logic Pro. They even had a Liverpool bass, sounds great in a mix, anyway thanks.

All's already been said: beautiful singing, nice production/ mix

You should give that Simon song another listen:

I know a woman who became a wife
These are the very words she uses to describe her life
She says a good day ain't got no rain
She says a bad day's when I lie in bed and think of things that might've been

That, to me, is heart-wrenching genius, and another

I know a father who had a son
He longed to tell him all the reasons for the things he done
He came a long way, just to explain
He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping then turned around and headed home again

That simply tears me up inside

You're doing some great stuff Kenny! Take care. Greg

Greg, thanks for this, sorry I've been away for a few days.
You're right it is heart wrenching and genius.
It's like a guide to writing, this is the example of greatness.
Thanks again.

This is the kind of tune we absolutely love. Everything you
need and nothing that you don't. Pared down to the
essentials, lyrically, vocally and arrangement wise.
Like Greg mentioned the metaphorical approach to
separation and distance is clever and effective.

It is so much fun running into a song like this.

Thanks for the chance to hear it.
