Meadow Lark

Been away for a while again - wife's medical issues. I put this together a couple of months ago. Just now having the time to upload it. I realize the name of the bird is spelled "meadowlark", but this song is not named after the bird. An old friend of mine has a daughter named Meadow Lark - her real name. I couldn't come up with a name for the song, and for some reason, I thought of her - thus the name of the song.

I tried very hard to get a sound on the pedal steel similar to that of Sarah Jory - a fantastic pedal steel player from Ireland. I've followed her for quite a few years.

The particulars:

File:Meadow Lark.SGU
Key=F , Tempo 70, Length (m:s)=3:53

Style is _CAVERNS.STY (Cavernous Ctry Pop Ballad Solo)

RealTracks in style: ~700:Bass, Electric, PopHalfNotesPush Ev 085
RealTracks in style: 1667:Pedal Steel, Soloist CountryPaul Ev 065
RealTracks in style: 871:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm ModernRnBRockWarmStrum Ev 065
RealTracks in song: 1543:Synth Pad, PopBelieve Ev16 065
RealTracks in song: 1705:Guitar, Electric, Soloist CountryBrent Ev 085
RealTracks in song: 1409:Piano, SynthLayer, Rhythm Soul70sSteady Ev16 100
RealDrums in Song:PopCountry16ths^04-a:Closed Hat, Rock-kick , b:Closed Hat, Push-kick

Mixed in the latest version of Audacity, Ver 3.42 - which has many new options.

Will be over later tonight to listen to as many of you I can. Looking forward to it!

Alan

Alan, IMHO you copied her playing style extremely well - great work on that.

PS - I liked her playing so I went on Amazon to purchase a CD or two. What a shock I got as they were $50-$70 USD! I'll pass, way to rich for this dude!

My dad showed me a 30-minute PowerPoint presentation of why one should always wear a condom during sex. They were all pictures of me!

Hi Mario ...

Glad you liked it. And yeah, $50 - $70 ain't gonna happen with me, either. That's outrageous! So, it's YouTube for me every time I want to hear her. Thanks a bunch for the visit.

Alan,

Hope you and Di are well.

Loved your composition. It has a great moody flow with a beautiful melody. That's the first time I've heard that pedal steel track - really nice. Great mix as well.

Much enjoyed!

Hi Bob,

Thank you so much for the very nice comments. I spent more time on this one than I do on most of my posts - off and on for over a week. And I agree, that's a real sweet pedal steel RT.

I'm doing pretty good for a guy just a couple of years away from 80 (77 y.o. real soon). I wish I could say the same for Di. Unfortunately, her health continues to decline. But, we deal with it.

Thanks for stopping in.

Alan

Alan, that's a very enjoyable tune! The steel is beautiful and sits nicely in the mix. The narrative development is subtle but clever and reflects the time you took to make it right. Wishing you and Di the very best, understanding there are many challenges present and future. Thanks for sharing! Ron

Hi Ron,

Thanks so much for the visit and kind words. I hadn't heard that pedal Steel RT before - so glad when I finally did hear it. And thanks for the encouraging words for Di's health issues. She's had two strokes - one massive, plus dementia that is progressing very quickly. There are multiple other issues, but those are the most troubling.

Again, many thanks!

Alan

Nice pedal steel work on this Alan. I might try that RealTrack out myself soon. The band sounds great too and the mix is, as always, top notch.
Best wishes to you and Di.

You certainly are correct that Sarah Jory is a treasure. I have been a fan for years. She is fun to watch, she really gets into it. Good job on the steel editing. The production arrangement and mix are great. Being a steel player I was all over this one. Fantastic listen. I wish you and Di well, Tom

Thank you very much, Laurent. Merci beaucoup!

Alan

PS: I tend to mix my bass lines a little louder than some folks do.

Hi Tom,

Yeah, I've been following Sarah for 8 or 10 years now. My favorite by here is her version of Brian May's "Last Horizon". Simply gorgeous! And yes, she can make some cringe-worthy - yet fun to watch - facial contortions when playing live. I used to go to Scotty's International Steel Guitar Conventions in the early 2000s. Scotty and I were good friends. I knew him from 1968 until his passing a few years ago. I bought several guitars and amps from his store over the years. He was a very nice gentleman. At his store, I met a few folks of some importance at one time or another: Barbara Fairchild, Stan Hitchcock, The Kendalls, Dolly Parton, and a few others. The steel guitar world lost a true gem when he passed.

I'm delighted you enjoyed it. I put a small amount of echo/delay and chorus on the steel. I boosted the mids just a touch on the RT. Finding the right rhythm pieces was the hardest part. I think I should have brought the EP (R channel) up a little more. Thanks for the very nice comments - much appreciated.

Alan

Lovely piece.
If you lifted the EP even a little you'd have had to rebalance everything else I think.
That section from 1.52 gives the sense of having a nice drip spring reverb on it which works well.
Cool stuff Alan.
Look after yourself.

Cheers

Hi Alan.

I haven't heard of Sarah Jory before this. I'll have to have a hunt around the internet and see what I can find.
This song is beautiful music.
As always, your chord progressions flow so smoothly and so comfortably from chord to chord. It's a skill I admire greatly.
I love your music and your arrangements.

You mentioned, that Di's medical issues have keep you away from the forum for a while. I'm so sorry to hear this. Please pass on my best regards to Di smile I sincerely hope that you are doing okay, too.

All the very best to both of you!
--Noel

Hey Al.
Your tune brought back a memory from 20 years ago.
My band was playing at a festival down in Devon U.K.
One of the acts on was Sarah Jory. She lit the place up with her performance.
So much energy.
Your production sounded great. Loved it.

Vic

Hi Ray ...

Glad you liked it. Thanks for letting me know. I always appreciate and look forward to your comments. And you're right about bringing up the EP - even a small amount. I went back to the stems and raised it the least discernable amount I could. And yes, it threw everything else out of kilter.

Best to you.

Alan
