I love free stuff! I use Steinberg Cubase as my DAW and they gave me a free edition of Melodyne...so I used it on this tune to create the harmonies from my lead vox...the older I get the harder it is to sing those high parts so this is my first serious attempt to use a program to create harmony parts...you can be the judges as to whether it works or not...so...if you do...thanks for listening...I always appreciate all commments...blessings...Dan HOLDING ME (Key Eb 94 BPM) https://soundclick.com/r/s7pl9rBiaB Components: BACKPAC.STY Backpacker Cajun 518 Bass, Electric Pop 2916 (X2) Guitar Acoustic Rhythm Country Folk Brent I added: Lead Vox, Piano, String Pad Harmonies: Melodyne Software Vocal Ooh's and Aah's created with the Yamaha Genos Third Acoustic guitar, percussion and everything else (Genos) PS...I stacked some actual sung harmonies on top of the Melodynes after I read several of the comments

Firesong, I can't comment on subject, but musically very solid. Vocals are top notch. If you didn't mention melodyne, I would have never guessed. Clear mix. Thank you for sharing.

This came out very well. Like Misha, I wouldn't have known that you used Melodyne. I don't have it anymore, but had it a while ago and know that the vocals can sometimes sound mechanical. That is certainly not the case here. I really liked that acoustic intro, and the strings when they came in, but the piano work was exceptional. I'm no piano picker, but I know what I like and I thought it was really good throughout. Loved the ending. I have some pretty cheap speakers and they started to break up on the chorus - I think it was the BGV's, but not sure. In my headphones they were a little loud in just a couple of spots. If nobody else mentions it, it's probably just my equipment so ignore it. There's an anointing on your writing Dan - keep it up and keep 'em coming.

Dan, you picked the best piece of software to create those harmonies. Melodyne is great for that task.
I really love all of your songs. Your vocals are great as are your songs' messages.
Loved it.

Lovely song. If you hadn't mentioned using Melodyne on the harmonies, I probably wouldn't have noticed. As it is, it's the main thing I listened for. Did you build the harmonies from the lead vocal? They seemed a bit "thick", which can be avoided by pitch shifting a different vocal track (which gives it timing differences) as well as trying to give the harmony vocal a slightly different character. I'm probably reading too much into this. Anyway, lovely song - as usual!

Even before the harmonies began, the song had a grab-me feel. I'm a full-fledged fan, Dan. I know what you mean about age robbing us of the high notes. My range is at least a step and a half lower than when younger.
Ok. There they are. The harmonies are correct, of course, but they have a strange, unnatural sound sometimes. I did a similar thing once (The Price) and still cringe if I hear it. There might be a better way to use Melodyne and I know others do it justice, but for now I lower the key or get someone else to help. I use Melodyne mostly to reduce the vibrato of my voice and also to help with the sibilance; then just to be sure certain important notes are at least close to pitch.
On the other hand, this is a great song, dude.

Dan,
A good write - lyrically and melodically. Nice production. Solid mix. Strong vocals. Harmonies sound good. When they get their loudest (highest sung notes) , there is a aspect that has a "generated from the main vocal" thing - but I think that is only because you identified as such from the beginning. It's only for a moment. The rest are very natural sounding.
Good stuff. (As always).

Misha, Brad, Mario, David, Marty and Floyd...hey boys thanks for your responses, comments and suggestions...I've taken all of them into serious consideration and made some changes that I think really help the song...I thought I could leave the Melodyne tracks alone...but...I couldn't...so I stacked some harmonies on top of them to humanize them...
David you were right...they were too much like the lead from which they came...with no variance or delay, etc. it was too vanilla.
Brad you were right...there is some distortion at the beginning of the chorus...I recorded the lead vox too hot and it distorted which in turn distorted my harmonies...couldn't correct it completely but I think I improved it a bit.
Marty...I corrected the pitch on one or two notes in the alto harmony and that helped.
Thanks to all you guys for your help...the recording herd after this comment was made is the newest cut...Dan

This is a well written, sung & constructed piece. I use correction software to fix harmonies but I usually sing the part as best I can a few times then compile a best of track before doing so. My parts are messy but the smaller distance a note is moved the better the result and, as mentioned, the variation in timing etc adds more character. I'm yet to venture from chord tones - that's something I need to learn more about.

I only heard it after you added some real harmonies but it sounded great to me. Of course your main vocal was superb. I am a secular humanist but I can still appreciate great Christian music and yours certainly is. Love that Genos but it still requires a decent player.

We only heard the song after you added more harmony parts but this version sounds great on our monitors and on Janice’s AirPods. Another good lyric, performances and production! Have we mentioned the Gaither Vocal Band before J&B

Great song. Top notch write, arrangement, production and performance. As others noted, the harmonies add nicely to the overall arrangement but I don't think enough can be said about the genre of Gospel's tone in your vocals. You've captured the cadence, phrasing and every other aspect of the uniqueness of the contemporary Gospel vocals really well.
