I spent the month of September visiting relatives and old friends
in Georgia and then in Texas. Also I was there for my Moms 91st
birthday. On the drive back we ran into quite a bit of rain, when I
got home and someone asked about the trip I responded with
“well, just a few miles north of Nashville…” I heard myself and
made a mental note of that line. So, the first two lines are from
something recent that I lived thru, the rest is fiction that I lived thru.
When I finish one of my home demo recordings I always reward
myself with a nice cold Dr. Pepper! Now you know more about me than
most folks. Skol! Salud! Here’s to ya. Hope you enjoy the listen, I’m open to
mix level suggestions, or noticeable clams, etc. Thanks

Promise Of Rain
© 2018 Kenny Leverett

Just a few miles north of Nashville
Caught in a hard September rain
In a sea of cars all drowning
Motionless and trying to maintain

Too much time to think about
The things that finally pulled us apart
Now doctors lawyers counselors
Can’t mend two broken hearts

And it’s an old familiar thunder
Always with the promise of rain
Movin on in a wide eyed slumber
Thinking we can leave behind the pain

Just a few miles north of Nashville
And the rain keeps coming’ down
Fighting everything inside me
That says turn this car around

And it’s an old familiar thunder
Always with the promise of rain
Movin on in a wide eyed slumber
Thinking we can leave behind the pain
And it’s an old familiar thunder
Always with the promise of rain

That was good. I mean, good. Songwriting, singing, production. I hope you don't need me to tell you it was good. You well earned that Dr. Pepper.

Took a while to "hear" the delay in the vocals. Very tasteful and not "effecty". Nice work.

Also had to look and see that was a BIAB soloist. Nice work there too.

Dang, grab you a six-pack!

Excellent Kenny!

Great lyrics, love the first verse especially. And your vocal is always special, lots of passion and great tone.

"Band" sounds great and I think the mix is spot on too. A little too much delay on the vocal for my tastes, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the song.

Really nice work, Kenny smile Precisely the kind of tune you can just get lost in and drift away to. Very relaxing, and very easily to digest. Love your vocals on this, and it is the perfect level of catchy too.

You should be proud of this one - thanks for sharing!

Cheers,

Kenny,

An Excellent, Top-Notch write! You seem to get better with each song (and you were "top-notch" to begin with!)!!

I love! your melodies!!! So "right" - sing-able, interesting, often unexpected.

Your lyrics are polished, yet "raw". Never cliche. A delight. Exceptional.

The production is super. Elegant. Your vocal, as always, has "heart".

THIS is a great listen.

(I thought the vocal was a bit more "crispy" than it should be)

Kenny,
Tangmo summed up my thoughts nicely:" That was good. I mean, good. Songwriting, singing, production. I hope you don't need me to tell you it was good. You well earned that Dr. Pepper."

Your vocals have a kind of visceral, attention grabbing quality I always enjoy and you don`t disappoint here. That said, I thought the delay on verses subtle as it is, was a bit distracting -worked for me on the chorus.

I'm addicted you know, I try to limit myself to one (Dr. Pepper) a day
but it tastes so much better when I feel I've accomplished something.

Thank you for your very kind words

Thanks Dave,

I appreciate your kind words, I went back and cut the delay just a little
will probably repost with a few other tweaks.
My hearing is getting so bad that I'm mostly using presets and not tinkering
too much so I'm looking for advice, thanks

Cool to bring up how you reward yourself. grin For me it's an A&W root beer. As someone already said this one represents a well deserved Dr. Pepper for you.

Kenny, what a great laid-back feel this tune has! It’s perfect for the subject matter! I love how the melody in the second line of each verse re-traces the steps of the first line to me it really makes the song! Great work again as always! Thanks, Torrey

beatmaster, thanks for the listen and the kind words,

I appreciate that you find the music relaxing and laid back
while the character in the song is suffering from anxiety and on
the verge of tears.
It's all good, I'm not trying to be sarcastic
Everybody hears songs differently, that's a great thing
Thanks

Good singing and melody. I really like the lyrics. The following stood out for me:

Now doctors lawyers counselors
Can’t mend two broken hearts

And it’s an old familiar thunder
Always with the promise of rain

Brilliant!

“Just a few miles north of Nashville

Man, what a way to kick off an emotion drenched tune.

This is one of those tunes that’ll rip the paint right off our your heart.

It’s a great write, sung soulfully and excellently produced with a very effective BiaB group of musicians.

High bar, indeed.

Hello, Kenny

Wonderful slow Ballad!
Great vocal and nice melody.
Reverb effect on vocal is beautiful.
It is also very cool to start from Am despite the tune in C major key.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Beautiful ballad, the melancholy chording fits nicely these darkening and rainy days. The effect on vocals sounds like whispering leaves when they fall. Great production, the solo guitar is excellent choice.
