"Love at 3"
Copyright Tom Sperrazzo, 1983
--------------------------
Backstory:
Ever have one of those unexplainable songwriting experiences when an entire project comes together in "minutes"? That was this, back in the 80's. Coming home after spending a delightful evening with "X" (name has been removed from song and title--not good to bring those old pre-marriage memories forward, if you know what I mean!), I pretty much had the entire thing mentally written in less than an hour. Then, in the 90's, I recorded this and featured live guitar by a guy I didn't really know at all (Nick Schilling, of Northern Idaho). He was referred by a friend, and he played this in 1 or 2 takes, never having seen the changes before.

In order to re-produce this, I used Splitter to isolate the guitar track from the 25-year old mp3, then pasted blocks of it (including the solo) into the RB guitar track to get some of the original guitar work. I think it turned out pretty good.
----------------------
Talk is right, late at night,
Orange tea and honey, black and white;
"Gettin' Blue with Sunny", life at sea;
That's LOVE AT 3.

Quiet time, rhubarb wine;
Basie in the corner, groovin' fine;
Lovely company for cat and me;
That's LOVE AT 3.

Friends and acquaintances,
Poetry, paintings--
All know your mellow touch;
Warm afterglow of a goodnight kiss,
Home with my thoughts in a rush.

Nearly three, only me;
Suddenly a hint of orange tea;
Shouldn't have to guess what that could be--
That's LOVE AT 3.

I don't know how you brought in that old guitar recording---too technical for me--but it turned out well.

Your lyrics effectively evoke that elation of spending a wonderful time with someone. Excellently crafted.

The melody is strong and memorable. Really good vocal performance on this!

"Love AT Three"
Think I've been there.

Well written.
Nice job of bringing it back to life.
Sound great.

Have to ask for the link to splitter, that looks like a handy tool.

When one of those moods hits you, it just hits you. I have the same thing with my art. Sometimes I just have to sit down and draw and colour all night until it's out of my system. It's the muses calling, I'm sure!

This was a joy to listen to and to read. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers,
Ember

Tano,

Love the vibe of this one . . . really cool jazz number, accentuated with some terrific, very warm turns of phrases. The vocal has the right feel to it, and sits nicely in the mix. Well done. I’m not a huge jazz fan, but this hits all the right notes. Liking it a lot!

All my best,

Deej

Tom,

A good write - visual and aural with a good dose of emotion.

Tracks sound good. Nice job of incorporating an older recording. It all seems to belong together. Nice vocal.

I like it. Enjoyed the listen.

Very enjoyable poetic and romantic song, really delivers the early morning love mood. Very good vocals and mixed in well, perfect for the song. Good work with rescuing that beautiful jazzy guitar, bringing an old record vibe. And good to have a cat there too smile

Groovin' fine. Sweet sounds. The kind of thing the band would play (because they love it) at 3 when the crowd is gone. Yeah, I know what you mean about all of those love at 3 stories, and how it's not always best to share the details. Thanks for that tip on Splitter. That should come in handy. Finely crafted song, and so well sung. Thanks, Tom.

Enjoy whatever happens!

This is another level. Totally another level. Your command of harmony / harmonic progressions is something else. Wish I could write like that - this could be a standard for the very top crooners. Bravo.

Tom, this is lounge jazz at its finest! Super work mixing that old guitar track into the new mix.

Everything is spot on here.

Loved it!

Great! I think I have said this before, your vocals remind me of a piano-composer guy named Michael Franks. Lived it!

Great job! I'm big into Swing Dance music and the vibe of your song reminds me of Moonlight Serenade by Glenn Miller. Just a great song to sway with your honey to on a beautiful night.

I like how you brought back to old guitar solo, that's pretty cool. It was a nice solo, so I can understand why you would want to bring it back.

Well done.
