Greg Johnson contacted me and asked if I would like to collaborate with him on a song. I assumed incorrectly it turned out, that he would be singing it since he has one of the best voices on the forum. He really wanted my take on it so I gave it a shot. I should make this very clear that the majority of this write was Greg’s. We hope everyone enjoys it. Tom

I’ll Take Mexico

I’m finally leaving, gonna make a run
I’m cashing out Gonna sell this dump

Pack my truck and go
Down to Mexico

Don’t check my Facebook, I won’t post
Gonna try a new look, turn into a ghost
i know where to go
I'll take Mexico

They’ll know me there as the guero
Underneath the big sombrero
Nice and slow
I'll take Mexico

They dream of California, the golden state
They can come up north and take my place
Take my share of gold
I’ll take Mexico

I’ve lost my way, I’ve lost control
Gonna make a break before I lose my soul
i know where to go
I'll take Mexico

They’ll know me there as the guero
Underneath the big sombrero
Nice and slow
I'll take Mexico

I’m hoping for a leap of faith it’s the place we need to be
not knowing if you’ll jump on board makes it hard for me to leave

So, come on baby, be my only one
Leave this northern nightmare for the southern sun
Pack your stuff and go
Down to Mexico

We’ll be loving and living life so well
What we left behind can just go to hell
like I told you so
Let’s take Mexico

They’ll know us as the gueros
Underneath the big sombreros
Nice and slow
Let’s take Mexico

Hey Guys, how cool is that?

Apart from it being a fabulous song and a stunning performance from Tom, what about that arrangement!

Loads of things going on there which are SO professional. Lots of variety with different instruments taking their part, but never getting in the way of each other. The step-change when the drums drop out in the bridge, the pauses and just so much of interest.

Brilliant piece of work and congrats to you both.

ROG.

Tom,

That was nice and it had "Tom Adams" all over it. Shame Greg didn't add some harmonies as I too think he has one of the best male voices on thus board.
A good listen with lots of variation in the backing, well done

Really liked that a lot - great chorus - laid back vocal suits the song so well.

I knew that I was gonna like this with you two guys working together on it...and it's great. I can hear the accordion, sounds cool, Tom's guitar accents, awesome, light skinned, fair haired dudes, whatever, running down to Mexico. Solid write and performance, sounds like a hit song.

ROG, Thanks for the very kind comments. Greg gets all the credit for the instruments dropping out on the bridge. I just tweaked the SGU by cutting the bridge in half, changing out the instruments, etc. The arrangement ended up very close to his original demo after taking on several different forms and then circling back to the original. He is very accommodating and easy to work with. Thanks again, Tom

Wow, you guys, just how great is that!

Sensational lyrics. I really liked the chord structure around the chorus. This gave the song its own hook.

This collaboration has to be seen as a real winner.

Missed Greg's vocals, 'cause they're always good, but Tommy, you nailed it instead.

Two of my favorite writers together! Nice.

Has the perfect relaxed, south-of-the-border feel.

"They’ll know me there as the guero
Underneath the big sombrero
Nice and slow
I'll take Mexico"

...makes me want to go on vacation.

Nice guitar accents. As ROG said, the bridge dropout is super.

Good mix (of course).

Easy and smooth. Nice and slow...

Wow guys! I was just thinking today that it would be great to win the lottery and head down to mexico! and here is a song about doing that very thing.

Great song. Great production. lots of cool things going on with a great mix.

Reminds me of Jimmy Buffet type of feel. Or the Chris Isaak baja sessions.

Awesome !

Gib, I thought he should have sung the whole thing! He wasn't having that though. That was about the only thing he wouldn't compromise on. Maybe I'll get him back someday by writing something for him to sing. Tom

Like mr jane said...makes us want to
head for the border (it is still open
isn't it?)

It appears that Greg has brought out
the CA side of Tom. That Tom genre
jewel has a lot of facets for sure!

We both enjoyed this mashup of two
of our fav forum artists. Great write,
vocal, guitar and production. But with you two
how could we expect anything less?

Forum fun!
